What are transponder keys?
The biggest change to the Automotive Industry in recent times has been the introduction of the built-in immobiliser system on all cars manufactured since 1995 (late ’94 in some cases). The built-in immobiliser system involves placing a microchip in the head of the key (a miniature transmitter and receiver). In the engine compartment there is an engine management system that recognises the signals transmitted from the key and will not allow the engine to start if the correct signals are not detected.
How does the microchip work?
A microchip is an electronic chip that has a permanent memory and contains an electronic code. An antenna in the transponder interfaces with an external electronic control device which emits a fixed frequency signal through the antenna. The transponder receives the signal and transmits its electronic code (by means of special frequency modulations) to the control device which processes the code. The transponder has no external input power supply (passive system), it receives the energy necessary to work from the signal emitted by the external control device (inductive coupling between the control device antenna and that of the transponder).
Shell key service
Oz Wide Locksmiths & Security can provide a shell key for your broken car key, which is a much cheaper option than replacing the whole key, as we can reuse the internal part of your key which has all the programming already in. This is a good option if the shell is broken but the blade of the key is still in good condition.
